Individuals and entities must hold a PAN card to carry out various financial transactions and fulfil their tax obligations in India.

Form 49A is well organised into various sections to simplify the filing process for customers. At the top corners, the form has designated spaces for applicants to attach their photographs. It consists of 16 components, each with a subsection that must be completed.

Components of Form 49A

The components present in PAN Form 49A are as follows:

  • Assessing Officer Code: This section requires the applicant to mention the Area code, Accounts office number, Accounts office type, Ranga code.
  • Full Name: Applicants must mention their marital status, first name, last name, and surname.
  • Abbreviation of the Name: Applicants can abbreviate their name as they want it to appear on their PAN card.
  • Other Name: Applicants must specify if they were known by any other name and provide details such as the first name, last name, and surname of their name.
  • Gender: Applicants indicate their orientation status.
  • Date of Birth: Individual applicants provide their date of birth, while organisations mention the date of partnership/ incorporation/ agreement or trust deed.
  • Father’s Name: Individual applicants, including married women, provide their first name, last name and surname of their name.
  • Address: Applicants provide details of their residence address and office address, ensuring accurate information.
  • Address of Communication: Applicants select the address of communication between the office or residence.
  • Telephone Number and Email ID: Applicants must mention their country code, state code, telephone/mobile number, and email ID.
  • State of Applicant: Applicants indicate whether they are an individual, HUF member, company, partnership firm, etc.
  • Registration Number: This field is for the registration number of companies, firms, LLP’s, etc.
  • Aadhar Number: If the applicant owns an Aadhar card, they must mention their Aadhar number.
  • Source of Income: Applicants specify from where they draw their income.
  • Representative Assessee: Applicants provide the name and address of the representative assessee if applicable.
  • Documents Submitted: Applicants mention all the documents submitted with the form.

How to Fill Form 49A

The considerations to be mindful of while filling out the form are as follows:

  • Language and Basic Rules: Form 49A must be completed in English using block letters and preferably in black ink. Each box provided should contain only one character, leaving the adjacent boxes empty. This ensures clarity and accuracy in the information provided.
  • Photographs: Applicants are required to attach two recent colour photographs to the top corners of the form. It’s crucial not to staple or clip the photographs to the form, as these will be displayed on the PAN card. The clarity of the picture on the PAN card depends on the clarity of the picture provided with the form.
  • Signature/Thumb Impression: Use only the left thumb impression if using a thumb impression. Sign or place the thumb impression across the photo on the left side of the form, ensuring it partially covers both the photo and the form. This signature/thumb impression should be on both the photograph and the form, particularly on the left side, as it will appear on the PAN card.
  • AO Code: The applicant is responsible for providing the AO Code, which indicates the tax jurisdiction under which they fall. This includes the Area Code, AO type, Range Code, and Area Number. This information can be obtained from the NSDL website, PAN centres, or the Income Tax office.
  • Correct Details: Take sufficient time to fill out the form accurately to avoid complications during processing and potential application rejection. Incorrect details can lead to delays and additional administrative procedures.

Online Method to Apply for Form 49A

Follow these steps to apply for Form 49A online:

  • Step 1: Open the official NSDL website.
  • Step 2: Scroll to the  PAN Card application form and choose ‘New PAN – Indian Citizen (Form 49A)’.
  • Step 3: Select the relevant category, such as individual, association of persons, body of individuals, company, trust, or limited liability partnership.
  • Step 4: Fill in all required fields with essential information, including name, middle name, surname, date of birth, title, email ID, mobile number, and more.
  • Step 5: Upload the necessary documents and pay the required fees.
  • Step 6: Submit the application and note the acknowledgement number that appears on the screen.
  • Step 7: Send the documents to the NSDL or UTIITSL office.

Offline Method to Apply for Form 49A

Follow these steps to apply for Form 49A offline:

  • Step 1: Download ‘Form 49A’ from the Protean website.
  • Step 2: Fill in the application.
  • Step 3: Attach the photographs and fill in the signature to the application.
  • Step 4: Submit the form and the necessary documents to the nearest PAN centre.
  • Step 5: Pay the required fees for the PAN card application.
  • Step 6: Note the acknowledgement number.

The PAN card will be issued within 15 days after verification of the documents.

Birth Proof

These documents are used as birth proof:

  • Driving licence
  • Passport
  • Domicile certificate issued by the government
  • Matriculation Certificate
  • Marriage certificate issued by Registrar of Marriages
  • Pension payment order
  • A copy of a birth certificate issued by a municipal authority, the Indian Consulate, or any office authorised by the Registrar of Birth and Death.
  • An affidavit sworn in front of a magistrate stating the date of birth.

Things to Remember

The following points should be kept in mind when filing Form 49A:

  • Use block letters and preferably black ink throughout the form to ensure clarity and eligibility.
  • Ensure all mandatory fields in Form 49A are accurately filled to avoid processing delays.
  • Avoid abbreviations when selecting a title, especially in the first and last names.
  • For companies, spell out the name without abbreviations, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
  • In the case of sole proprietorships, refrain from using prefixes in the name to maintain consistency.
  • Attach photographs in the designated spaces on the form, ensuring they are not stapled or clipped.
  • Provide accurate name, address, and date of birth details that match the enclosed proof documents.
  • Thoroughly review the checklist of accepted proof documents to prevent potential rejection or delays in processing the PAN card application.
  • If applicable, the representative assessee must furnish proof of address and identity with the application.
  • The applicant must ensure all submitted documents are issued in their name, avoiding discrepancies during verification processes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Upon submission, PAN applicants with a valid Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) from an authorised Certifying Authority (CA) in India will receive a 15-digit acknowledgement number. This number should be saved and printed for future reference.

A physical PAN card fee is Rs. 107 if the communication address is in India and Rs. 1,017 if it's outside India.

Form 49A is used to apply for Permanent Account Number(PAN) for Indian citizens, companies or entities.
